Wear that lifejacket…Yea, yea…how many times have you heard that and thought “well, I can swim…the river is shallow…the water’s not that cold…I can hold onto the boat.”   The recent death of an athlete on the New River, while canoeing, should tragically remind us all that “stuff happens”…regardless of your experience, fitness, or perceived lack of danger.   Canoers, kayakers, solo pontoon boaters, wade fishman etc. …think about it.  The key to success with lifejackets is having them on…before the accident happens.   Even if you don’t survive the accident,  perhaps a lifejacket will allow searchers to find your body on the first day…and your family won’t have to endure a multi-day search…

Steelhead Trip to Penn…Fish for steelhead with local guide Marty Shaffner  there are plans for an early Nov. or a late Nov. trip…don’t wait to book a spot.    Check Marty and Jeff Payne’s web site…tristateangler.com

Cold weather clothing…consider this:  Each season there are new products and synthetic materials with great claims for insulating ability, moisture transport and lightweight.  Despite all these advances, and some are quite good, it’s still hard to beat good old wool clothing whether its pants, shirts, sweaters,  socks, gloves etc.  In many instances, it performs better….and it may already be in your closet, thrift shop or surplus store.  Check our web site for detailed cold weather camping guidance.

Tips for Toasty Toes:  Insulate the whole body including neck and head.  The body diverts blood from the feet (and hands) to keep torso and head warm.   Insulate those areas at the start before they feel chilled.  Your feet will stay warmer.   Insulate the legs….blood flowing down uninsulated legs is cooled thus less effective keeping your feet warm.   Wear good wool socks  (quality wool is comfortable and doesn’t itch), with wool liner socks…or two pairs of wool socks.   Boots must fit loose to accommodate extra socks.   If boot fit is snug…you are restricting circulation and feet chill quickly.  Waterproof socks or thin neoprene socks can work great…they keep foot perspiration from dampening your insulating layer of socks…don’t knock it unless you’ve tried it….this “vapor barrier” principle is effective in cold weather…

Just Stuff It!...Good advice for your sleeping bag.  Routinely customers complain they can’t roll up their sleeping bag and get it back into the “stuff sack.”   And routinely they are amazed to learn it shouldn’t be rolled, but stuffed instead.  Grab the foot section and push it all the way to the bottom of the stuff sack.  Then grab handfuls of sleeping bag and stuff …packing tightly as you go.  Rest the bottom of your stuff sack against your foot so it doesn’t slide.  Not only will it pack smaller…it’s better for the insulation…

Thanks for shopping locally.…we sincerely appreciate your business!
