Rogers; Ashe County, specifically the Helton Creek area; or the New River along Ashe/Allegheny; or streams in VA like Big Wilson; here are good options:  On Helton… highmountaincabins.com and zydecomoon.com (being built…ready in Nov.);  on the New…riversidecanoeing.com (camping and furnished cabins) ;  on Big Wilson highlandhideaways.com.

Sleeping Bag Maintenance….All sleeping bags benefit from proper storage and maintenance.  Always air out a bag thoroughly after a camping trip.  Even if no rain, moisture from your body is trapped in the insulation….dry it out when you get home.  Store your bag loosely,  in a large laundry bag, stretched out under your bed or hanging in a closet… never stuffed tightly in its “stuff sack.”  When dirty,  spot wash with mild soap and a sponge.   Or, hand wash in a tub or washing machine.  Be careful.   Many synthetic bag owners wash their bags in the machine at home with no problems…but the potential is that baffling could tear.  A front loading machine is more gentle.  Quality goose down bags are best washed by hand in a tub.  Baffling in a down bag is more susceptible to tearing, so be careful handling a soaking wet down bag.  Then dry on low heat (or no heat) in a commercial dryer.   Need guidance?...check with the manufacturer...  Dry cleaning is usually not a good option …

Winter Camping and Backpacking…In about a month we’ll experience our first frost in the mountains, and winter weather can follow, especially at the higher elevations.  If you enjoy the challenge of cold weather, now’s a good time to evaluate equipment and make adjustments.  On our website are two in-depth articles on winter outings… based on tried and true techniques and good and bad winter experiences.

Maintaining Waterproof/Breathable Rain Gear…If you wear yours much, it needs maintenance….  Clean it and re-treat the outer fabric with products by Nikwax, Grangers, or Tectron.   Gore-tex or other similar “membrane” is always waterproof until punctured or worn away and requires no maintenance.  But, the outer fabric layer, to which the membrane is bonded or laminated, does require cleaning and water-repellent treatment… so the membrane can perform up to it’s potential.
