Sneaking out early…Thanksgiving evening, tomorrow, we’re are closing at 3pm.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

One Night Stand…The next one-nighter tying class will focus on several Stonefly patterns especially for the winter season.  These are new patterns we’ve not done previously, including a realistic Yellow Stonefly.   Here’s a good chance to broaden your stonefly selection and learn some new techniques in the process.   Cost is $10 to cover material, handouts etc.   Class is Thursday Dec. 4th from 7-9pm.   Please register in advance…

New Reel and Warranties:  We have just received the new Ross Worldwide Flyrise Reel and are impressed with its smoothness and quality.  Although not a milled and anodized reel, it is certainly a step above the typical cast and painted reels, and it come with a superior drag system that was on their Rhythm reel costing twice as much.  All this for only $100.   Ross also has a lifetime warranty on their overseas products.  (make sure you read the qualifying language)

New Lines and Products…any day could be the start of the next retail “boom,” (or at least holiday shopping) and we are stocking up with new lines and new products and new accessories.  And, soon I hope, the website will be updated to reflect what’s new here at CMS…watch for details.

Great Gift…2009 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar…These are very attractive calendars  with color photos and maps  along the Parkway.  Cost is  $10.99.  They are published by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.  Designed in the 1930s, the Parkway was a “make work” project during the Great Depression.  Construction began in 1935 and was finished in 1987…52 years.  It’s 469 miles long and connects the Great Smokies and Shenandoah National Parks.

Cold Weather Tips…Winter seems to be here earlier.   Our web site has some tried and true tips in the articles on cold weather camping and backpacking.  Here’s some fundamentals:  Insulate the head and neck with insulated hats, scarves, balaclavas, neck gaiters or hoods.   Two layers of good wool socks (75% wool or more) in boots that fit loosely help keep toes warm.  Dress in layers to allow adjustment for temperature and activity changes…yes, even layer your long underwear…buy the size you need and then another one size larger.  If you over insulate the head and torso, your hands and feet will stay warmer.  Wind that penetrates the layers of insulation reduces its effectivness…wear wind/waterproof shell jackets and pants.

Ins and Outs of Underwear…to be brief (pun intended) here’s what you need to know.  The best performing, best all around (keeping you warm and dry and easily laundered) long underwear is made of “treated” polyester (not polypro) or high quality wool, will be medium weight,  and will cost about $25 for a top or a bottom.  Good wool e.g. Smartwool is substantially more but fold love it.   It will fit well but NOT tight.  (looser is a little warmer).  Everybody makes a “wicking” or quick-dry synthetic or wool underwear…or at least they claim to…and all good brands perform about the same.  Sorry, advertising claims and photos of shapely,  muscular models  won’t make us more attractive in our “skivvies” (or out of them) or keep us magically warm and toasty.  Golfers and business folks might like silk long underwear;  hunters in a tree stand or duck blind might like heavy weight underwear due to long periods of inactivity; and runners and cross country skiers might like a thin, lightweight underwear.   And cotton may be okay for a football game or an electrical service employee, but is never recommended for outdoor activities when you are outside for extended periods of time.
