2009 Blue Ridge Parkway Calendar…These are very attractive calendars  with color photos and maps  along the Parkway.  Cost is  $10.99.  They are published by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.  Designed in the 1930s, the Parkway was a “make work” project during the Great Depression.  Construction began in 1935 and was finished in 1987…52 years.  It’s 469 miles long and connects the Great Smokies and Shenandoah National Parks.

Winter is Fishing Time…Some of the best trout fishing of the year occurs from now until spring.   Delayed Harvest streams will be stocked again during the first week of Novemberand there are more delayed harvest streams than last year.  Floating the rivers like the Watauga in E. Tenn. will be excellent and if you want a chance at a monster Brown on the S. Holston and the Watauga in Tenn.,  late Nov. to Jan. is a prime time.  Fly fishing classes  (fishing and tying classes)  will continue thru the winter.  Guided trips are great ways to really get the best of the fall and early winter fishing, and the guides we use are excellent.   And,to help with holiday shopping…a guided trip is a great gift for  folks.

The Carolina Fly Fishing Club  (carolinaflyfishingclub.org)  is an excellent resource to meet more fishermen and learn more about the sport.  The club meets the 2nd Tues of the month at 6:30pm at Gander Mountain at exit 36 on I-77 (the SE quadrant of the exit near the movie theatres.)

It’s also Hiking Time…Winter is a great time to hike and the leaves off the trees create some spectacular views that you won’t experience at other times.   The local hiking club, Hikers of Iredell, has had some great hikes.  Check out their web site at iredellhikingclub.com  for more information and meeting times.  Paticipation in the club trips is a safe and educational way to get in to hiking, backpacking and enjoying the backcountry.

Ins and Outs of Underwear…to be brief (pun intended) here’s what you need to know.  The best performing, best all around (keeping you warm and dry and easily laundered) long underwear is made of “treated” polyester (not polypro) or wool, will be medium weight,  and will cost about $25 for a top or a bottom.  It will fit well but NOT tight.  (looser is a little warmer).  Everybody makes a “wicking” or quick-dry synthetic or wool underwear…or at least they claim to…and all good brands perform about the same.  Sorry, advertising claims and photos of shapely,  muscular models  won’t make us more attractive in our “skivvies” (or out of them) or keep us magically warm and toasty.  Golfers and business folks might like silk long underwear;  hunters in a tree stand or duck blind might like heavy weight underwear due to long periods of inactivity; and runners and cross country skiers might like a thin, lightweight underwear.   And cotton may be okay for a football game or an electrical service employee, but is never recommended for outdoor activities.
