New Products…Not only do we receive our new winter clothes shipments in the fall, we also begin to receive the new fly fishing products over the next 2-3 months.   Already coming in are a variety of Fishpond products, with more to follow from Simms, William Joseph, Rio and others.  We also have new books arriving this week…probably the broadest selection of fly fishing books in the area…and, if we don’t have it, we can easily order it.

Cheaper than Chains?...Yep, in some cases our prices are cheaper than chain stores.  We hear it from customers; we’ve seen it on items like fuel canisters, Mountain House meals etc.…sometimes  dollars cheaper!   In many cases, our prices and those at chain stores are exactly the same on identical items like backpacks, fly rods, clothing etc. ….and yes, sometimes we’re a little more expensive on small items.  The big difference?... we’re here to help; we know how to fit backpacks;  we’ll teach you fly fishing;  we know how to fit boots; we know how to paddle canoes and kayaks….   We’ve done this for years and we’re here to pass along what we’ve learned and help you enjoy the outdoors.

Water Treatment…Recently we’ve had several questions regarding water treatment methods.  Some things to consider.   Micro Filters remove everything but viruses…and waterborne viruses aren’t apparently a problem in this country.   Water run thru a microfilter is immediately ready to drink….unless you also want to chemically treat.   Chemical treatments kill viruses but may not kill some “critters”.  Chemical treatment, according to the manufacturer, requires the proper dose and the prescribed waiting time:  30 min. with Iodine and 4 hours with Chlorine.   Some treatment devices require batteries…which may die or fail to function in cold weather…and electrical and electronics can fail when dropped…  Water that is muddy or full of particulate matter is only cleared by allowing it to settle out or be filtered.   These are probably the biggest issues...   Weigh the pros and cons when deciding what works best for you and your wallet.

Backcountry Sanitation…folks are quick to blame backcountry “gastrointestinal distress  on bad water, or inferior  water treatment systems.  Actually, it may not be the water at all.  A lot of folks now think backcountry illness is often due to poor sanitation…like failing to wash hands thoroughly after  toilet duties.”   Problems are spread by sharing food e.g. passing around a bag of “gorp” that everybody reaches into with their hands, clean or not.  Inadequate sanitary procedures and sharing food and beverages may be causing more problems than you realize.

Intro to Fly Fishing Classes…

Our standard Intro class is Oct.  8,  7-9:30 pm, in the store,  with casting on Oct. 11 at 7:45am.   It covers the basics of equipment, knots and accessories; flies and selection; fishing and casting techniques, and places to go.    We’ll also be happy to schedule a class for 2 or more people to suit your schedule. Deadline for registration is Oct. 6  Our next Intro Class is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 22.   Delayed Harvest streams have just been stocked and fishing in those will be excellent from now, through the winter,  until next June.

Saltwater Fly Fishing ClassFall fly fishing at the coast can be great.  Intersted?...it’s  time to learn the basics.  We’ll cover the fundamentals of saltwater gear, flies, knots; leaders, accessories; places to go and how to improve your casting for saltwater conditions and guide trips.  The classroom portion is Oct. 15, from 7-9pm.  Deadline for registration is Oct. 11th  Casting is Sat. Oct. 18th at 8 am.   You should be very comfortable with fundamentals of roll casting and false casting.  We’ll work on speed casts, casting sinking lines, delivery on the backcast, increasing  distance and line management unique to saltwater.

Stripping Basket/Wading Belt…The William Joseph Stripping Basket/Wading belt is a good, multiple use item.  It’ll work as a wading belt; water bottle holder; back support; and a collapsible/stowable stripping basket.  The stripping basket function works on wade trips, float trips and saltwater surf and boat trips.  If you  experience the line  tangling around boots, laces, rod handles,  paddles etc… or being carried downstream by swift current and messing up “shooting”…the WJ Stripping Basket may be just what you need….$33.

BPA Update…according to the latest report we heard, the scientific community is still undecided regarding the potential hazard (if any) of BPA in the plastic of your water bottles.  Nevertheless we are carrying BPA free bottles by Camelback, Nalgene and Kleen Kanteen…and some that contain BPA.

Fall Color Paddling…Fall is one of the best times to enjoy paddling, especially on the New River in Ashe and Allegheny County…and color is already starting to show.  Temps may be a little “crisp” in the morning,  but the rest of the day will be great.  Looking for canoe and kayak rentals, and shuttle service?  …check out Riverside Canoeing in Crumpler at 336 982-9439  riversidecanoeing.com…for excellent, friendly service
