Saltwater Fly Fishing Class…Fall fly fishing at the coast can be great. If interested , it’s time to learn the basics. We’ll cover the fundamentals of saltwater gear, flies, knots; leaders, accessories; places to go and how to improve your casting for saltwater conditions and guide trips. The classroom portion is Sept. 16 from 7-9pm. Casting will be Fri. evening Sept. 19, 7 -8:30pm. You should already know and be comfortable with the fundamentals of roll casting and false casting. We will work on speed casts, casting sinking lines, increasing distance, and line management in surf and on boats. Cost is $35. Please make advance reservations by Sept. 13^th (if interest, we’ll plan another on Sept. 23).

Intro to Fly Fishing Classes…

Ladies Only Intro Class…This is a first…Sept. 17… register by Sept. 15 same format as the standard, but just for women. If there is interest, we can plan another in late Sept. or early Oct.

Our standard Intro class is Sept. 24 7-9:30 pm, in the store, with casting on Sept. 26th at 6:45am. It covers the basics of equipment, knots and accessories; flies and selection; fishing and casting techniques. If interested, email or call to register no later than Sept. 20. Trout fishing should really take off on Oct 1 with the restocking of Delayed Harvest streams…now’s the time to get ready!

One Night Stand Fly Tying…This month’s “one nighter” is Thursday, Sept. 26 from 7-9pm, and will explore “Tying Parachute Dry Flie”….different methods and materials used in tying parachutes. Patterns will include Hare’s Ear, Ant, and Gulper Special parachutes. Cost is $10. Please call or email to reserve a spot.

There’s a lot of good NC info by resident sportsman… good practical info and local knowledge. The Sept. issue is definitely worth your time.

Winter Clothing is arriving…and so is colder weather. We’ve got a good selection of proven, practical outer and under garments from North Face, Columbia, Smartwool, Terramar and others. That first frost in the mountains is only about 3-4 weeks away. Now’s the time to begin getting ready for chilly temps.

Smallmouth Fishing in the New River…Excellent and plenty of water. There’s only a few more weeks of good fishing. Watch the water levels and clarity and don’t miss out on what could be some of the best action of the season. Water levels are up due to the rain and, when the river is clear, fishing can be really good. Better levels mean good floating whether with a guide, personal pontoon or canoe and kayak. If you are wading, it’s even easier and that’s a great way to really learn and cover the water. We’re happy to steer you toward sections to wade and can keep you posted on guided float trips and help advise you on flies etc.
