Boogle Bugs…New…High Quality…fish love ‘em.   If you’re into popping bugs, you’ll love these well made bugs from Alabama (and maybe China) .  Excellent, durable finish and the fish like them…at least a few New River smallies did.   We’ve got 4 colors, #4, at an introductory price of $4.99 ea.   You’ll be impressed with their looks and durability.

Custom Fly Rods…One of a kind… We take orders and the price is right…many in the $200 category… made locally by Sam Stitcher in Clemmons, of Rocky River Fly Fishing.  We have a beautiful example of his work….  Choice of components and blanks could change the price.  See our demo and what $200 gets.  Sam adds special touches… no two alike.

Bug Battlers…Insect repellents that work have always been at least 25-35% DEET or more (now proven not harmful…when used as directed).   But many folks are still learning about products like Pemanone  (permethrin)…spray on clothing only and it last two weeks even with washing.  (Duke Power line clearing crews report good results).  This is an especially good way to combat Ticks.

We have an excellent free  brochure on Ticks…from the health department.  And, if you find one “stuck” to you, try the Tick Remover tool.  It works great and doesn’t risk squeezing the body of tick…greatly minimizing the chances of infection and disease…

A good night’s sleep…sometimes an extra ½ inch makes the difference.   That’s certainly true with mattresses.   Ask anybody who has shifted from a 1½” thick Thermarest pad to one that’s 2” thick.  The tradeoff, of course, is a little extra weight (8 oz) and a little more bulk when rolled (about 1”).  For backpacker’s, there are other ways to cut 8 oz.  For other campers and fishermen, it’s no big deal and that extra ½” makes a big difference.

New River Canoe Rental and Shuttle…Riverside Canoe, Kayak & Tube Rental is a very friendly husband and wife business located on the S. Fork between W. Jefferson and Sparta, just upriver from the confluence of the N & S forks in the Piney Creek area.  (travel tip…just follow all the signs for Rivercamp USARiverside is on the Ashe County side)  They offer camping on site and have “camping cabins” for rent.  Rates are reasonable.   They also have been helpful running shuttles for fishermen and guides who are using their own raft or pontoon boat.   Check them out…336 982-9439…www.riversidecanoeing.com

Knee Pads for fly fisherman…We’ve just added Dan Bailey knee pads to our inventory particularly for guys who fish smaller streams and need to protect the fabric of their breathable waders and their  knees…crawling up to unsuspecting natives.   Having used a variety of knee pads for canoeing, these look like they would be great for that as well…easy on an off and fit a wide range of leg sizes…

Floaters…Protect your cell phones, wallets, etc….Yep, just when you think it won’t happen…in or over you go…or somehow water found it’s way to where you thought your valuables were secure.  Last week, paddling and fishing on the New, I helped chase down various items lost overboard and watched folks shaking out wet wallets and cell phones.  Doubling Zip-Loc bags may be enough protection but nothing beats one of the many waterproof cases or bags for your valuables.   Tip:  got a wet phone?…put it in a bag with uncooked rice…and the rice just may “pull” the moisture out and salvage the phone….

Out West… floating and fly fishing… Here’s great opportunity for a week of great fishing on the S Fork of the Flathead River in Montana’s  Bob Marshall Wilderness.  Two slots left (maybe)… contact Tom Dickerson tdickerson@yorktech.com    home: 803 628-0090.

Tip for Paddlers and Floaters:  Occassionally need an anchor? … floating and fishing you do.  Take a mesh bag…load it with one or more river rocks and tie it to your anchor rope.  When you’re thru…dump out the rocks.   The mesh bag works well…but it doesn’t hold up to repeated dragging.   Another option is simple a piece of old logging chain that’s 4-6 feet long.   Use the whole length for a controlled drag/drift…or fold it to make it shorter.

Fishing Classes…. Please make advance reservations for all classes…If we don’t have signups 2 days prior to the scheduled class, it is canceled.
