Charlotte Fly Fishing Show…Feb. 8-10, 2008Put it on your calendar now…

Holiday Festivities in Downtown:  Nov. 27 is the annual tree lighting at the Civic Center; Nov. 28 is the NC Symphony Holiday Pops concert and Friday Nov. 30 and Sat. Dec 1 is the Open House Downtown.  Businesses will be open late on Friday evening; there  will be carolers on the streets; an “ice” skating rink and carriage rides.  And yes, there will be some Holiday sales and refreshments,  just for the open house.  Join us for a festive time in one of the nicest downtowns anywhere.

Holiday Specials…Yes, we’ll be running sales every week during the holidays.  They’ll change on Saturday mornings and cover a variety of items throughout the store.  And…you just never know when that jolly old Christmas-spirited sales elf will cut you a deal….

“Hottest Undies in Town”… Terramar is one of the industry leaders in silk, polyester and polyester/wool blends.   Their 2-layer Body Sensors EC2 Quik-Dri  for $25.99 is our best seller and based on customer feedback it’s better/warmer than the more expensive “Under Armor” folks have tried…and more comfortable too.  Many companies make “compression” underwear…but if you are not playing professional sports, you probably don’t want and won’t benefit from compression (i.e. tight fitting) underwear.  Polyester, not poly pro or nylon, is definitely the material of choice as far as synthetic materials.  Modern wool, such as Merino, and wool blends are excellent as well, and very comfortable…

Simm products have arrived…The first of the Simms product line has arrived.  More will be phased in over the next few months.  Some of the new products aren’t available until after the first of the year.  So far we’ve received Freestone Waders $199 , Freestone mesh vest $79, Wader bag $39, Neoprene Socks  $20,  Web Belt for casual wear $12

It’s in the bag…fleece that is…Kelty makes a great, reasonably priced polar fleece sleeping bag…$42.  Used inside your regular sleeping bag, it will add 10-15 degrees to the temperature range.  Used by itself, it makes a nice summer bag.   And, used like a comforter, it’s a nice, warm accessory for sitting around in the winter watching TV…or maybe even at a sporting event.

30-35 Degree Bag SALE…Here’s a deal on a lightweight,  compact Kelty mummy bag for late spring, summer and early fall.  SAVE 30%...now only  $49.  (Bag tip: long underwear, a ski hat, wool socks and a fleece liner bag can extend a 30 degree bag down to 10 degrees, with a good foam sleeping pad….and you get a versatile combination…)

Fire Ban Continues…The National Forest Service office for this area is continuing the fire ban for all National Forest Service areas.  This ban does not restrict the use of camping stoves.   There have been over 45 fires reported this season…six of these have burned over 9,000 acres.

Woodsman’s Pal in stock…You’ve probably seen these advertised in a variety of national magazines.   It’s a superb cutting tool for campers, hunters, or anyone doing yard work or land clearing.  It does tasks better than a machete or brush axe and it’s only 17 inches long and weighs 23 oz.  Made in Pennsylvania  since 1941.  Used by the military in WWII, Vietnam and Desert Storm.   It’s unique…a great tool and a great gift…$89.

Hot Seller and Great Gift… the new book Western NC Fly Guide  by J. Hall, has become our fastest selling book, but that’s not surprising.  It’s full of great photos and stream information on many (not all) of the popular and some of the lesser known streams.   Also great info on fly selection and hatch charts.  Definitely a resource that any fly fisherman will want… and our 2nd shipment has just arrived

Toasty Tootsies?...are you already feeling winter’s chill in your toes and feet?  There is a simple solution for most:  good wool socks in shoes or boots that aren’t too snug.   Good wool (like the merino wool in Smartwool socks) is warm, comfortable and doesn’t itch!  That’s a fact you can count on.  The thicker the socks (or wearing/layering two pair) the warmer the feet…but shoes must be big enough to comfortably accommodate the additional insulation.  Put those synthetic and cotton socks away and shift to wool…one of Mother Nature’s best insulators (the other is Goose down).
