Fly of the Month…the 3rd Thurs. in July at 7pm,  veteran instructor Mickey Reavis continues “Fly of the Month” program… One evening for $10.  July is Klinkhammer, CDC & Elk and more.  The Klinkhammer is a unique but proven pattern and method for tying a dry fly…unlike your standard dries and emergers.  CDC is a very productive material for flies but does take some training to tie with it effectively.  Here’s a chance to learn at least two techniques and patterns in one evening.     We need a head count so register now…2 seats are left.

Summertime Flies…fishing flies that it:   Few things are more exciting than catching a smallmouth bass on a topwater fly or lure, and the New River through and around Ashe and Allegheny County has been fishing quite well.  (many trout streams are very low…but the river is hanging in there with a tolerable water level)  We have some of the best patterns you’ll find and many are locally tied and not available from other stores and catalogs.  They are all proven patterns for our waters.    We also have great summer trout flies…especially a variety of terrestrial patterns.   Some of our popular streams were stocked last week.  Other anglers have moved to  “wild” streams and are catching natives.

Wading for Smallies…but where:  the first reaction of folks after getting a brief look at a river is “there’s not much access” or “how do you know where to go?”   The answer is:  poke around and explore with a DeLorme Atlas or a river map for paddlers (e.g. the free New River Map for Ashe County);  ask for advice from others; get in the water and wade; take a float trip and make good mental notes on bottom conditions and wadability; rent a canoe and shuttle or go with a paddler and study the bottom and local landmarks.  It’s easy…but you’ve got to spend a little time doing research and “work” in the field.  In many cases you find the best spots wading or floating thru and over them….Many times you can’t tell looking at the river from the car.

Float Trips are Great during the Summer:  One of the best (and easiest) way to fish remote water for smallmouth bass is a guided float trip.  These are easily arranged with 1.5-2 hours from Statesville, with excellent guides.  Half day and all day flaats are available and prices are reasonable…save on gas….and you don’t need and out of state license.

Local Fly Fishing Clubs:  There are actually 3.   Trout Unlimited in Statesville,  Ladies in the Stream in Statesville; and Carolina Fly Fishing Club (FFF) in Mooresville.  If you want info just ask us.
